Since we’re on the whole “guys who did steroids” kick, let’s just get one Mr. Matt Lawton out of the way right now. Take a look at Lawton’s career stats, get out a red pen, and see if you can draw a line separating the time that Lawton took steroids with the time he didn’t take steroids. Now, notice which team is on the “non-steroid” side of the line? Sucks, doesn’t it?
Derrek Lee (not on steroids) high fives Matt Lawton (recently off steroids).
In a frantic attempt to save the 2005 season, Jim Hendry shipped Jody Gerut to Pittsburgh for Lawton. Lawton responded with an awful line in the mercifully brief time he was a Cub before being shipped off to the Yankees less than a month after coming to Chicago.
Low Point: August 3, 2005, in just his second start with the Cubs with the Cubs clinging to a slim hope that they can win the Wild Card, Lawton goes 1-4 with a worthless leadoff single and two strikeouts against the Phillies. Lawton pops out to short in the 5th with the Cubs down 3 and 2 men on. He then whiffs with the go-ahead run on second in the top of the 7th in a 3-3 tie. Cubs lose 4-3.
Did You Know? Lawton was the first MLB player to test positive for boldenone, an anabolic steroid more commonly used by cage fighters. Awesome?
